I really love the Valencia Ride+. But there's a few things that I hope get looked at in future versions. First, the control/status display uses a lens that can't be read using polarized sun glasses. I realize that most injection-molded plastics show stress lines in polarized light, but there must be some way of avoiding this because it is not a problem on the plastic display covers in my car or on the Specialized Speed Comp on my other bikes. The fenders are much appreciated. Got caught in heavy rain, and they really help. But the attachment mid-fender is a clip that rattles, so the bike sounds like something is going to fall off. Any way of maybe cushioning the attachment point to reduce the rattle? The ride is very hard without any shock absorbers. How about even the flexible handle bar stem, and something on the seat column? The tires are quite narrow (maybe contributes to the hard ride). This is a problem for my commute because the roads aren't in the best of shape, with some spots of sand or gravel on the path. I'd prefer a 38mm width. And Schrader valves instead of Presta. Have noticed a marked decrease in battery capacity over the 700 total miles I've gone so far. When I first did my 20 mile round-trip commute, I could set the assist on 4 and get both directions on one charge (yes, I know that's being lazy, but it was great fun). After a couple trips, had to drop to level 3 assist or I ran out of battery, and that is one heavy bike to pedal uphill without assist. That lasted for a bit, but now I need to use level 2 part-time to get back with enough juice. I've tried "tricking" the charger by fully charging the battery, unplugging it, then the following morning connect it again to try to top off the battery. Still did not help much. I plan to buy a second charger to recharge at work. I've tried hauling the charger with me and recharging at work, and that gives enough to make it home so far. So is the statement that the battery does not have a memory effect bunk? Can't see what could be done about this, but the balance is heavily to the rear of the bike, making handling a little clumsy. I like having the battery pack on the rear rack, but maybe that needs to move? Thanks so much for producing the Ride+. Really a fun machine overall!
The Valencia + has made my commute very enjoyable. Hills and headwinds are no longer a concern. I no longer arrive at work sweating. The battery capacity could stand to be a littler larger though I am able to travel 15 miles at maximum assist level enabling me to get to and from work on one charge. It is EXTREMELY easy to use and is very smooth. My biggest frustration is the computer programmed maximum assist speed of about 19-20 MPH that cannot be altered by the owner. 24-25 MPH would be preferable. Overall I would recommend this bike to anyone with a moderately short commute. It is a little heavy, compared to my regular mountain bike so biking in hilly country without the assist feature would be unpleasant.
I've been commuting 30 miles r/t for 10 years and decided that I wanted some assist with hills and headwinds - I got the Valencia+ and have ridden it 880 miles so far. Trek used the Bionx system, so it is a great ebike at heart, but there are some quirks.For one, instead of using the 10AH battery that is standard with the Bionx PL350, Trek uses a 6.4AH battery, so the range with assist, at best, is a little over 40 miles. Trek also left off the throttle so this is only a pedal assist bike, which is just what I wanted but perhaps not for everyone.Note that it is easy to ride this bike with no assist at all though I wouldn't want to do that up hills. On the flats, I often turn the battery regeneration mode on to the lowest level just so I get a bit more resistance and a better workout. It's kind of like turning up the resistance on a spinning bike.The kickstand is not well designed for an ebike. Even turning the front wheel all the way to the right, it is very easy to tip over. I emailed Trek about that and they are aware of the issue and working on it. Even extending the kickstand 1/4 inch or so would greatly help.I also just broke a spoke on the rear wheel [...]. The dealer has rebuilt the wheel and hopefully that will not happen again.For a long commute, Trek recommends buying a second charger. I decided to do that, so I can charge at home or at work, [...].All in all, this is a great bike. I fly up the Queensboro Bridge and still get lots of exercise. I bike in strong winds where I wouldn't have with my old Trek 7100.If you need greater range or a throttle, it might be better to just buy a plain Valencia and have the PL350 installed on it. That way you get the 10AH battery, but for my commute the 6AH works fine.
